Former Sheriff's Deputy Killed After Going On Georgia Shooting Spree That Left 2 Dead, 2 Wounded

DECATUR, Ga. (AP) -- Authorities say a former law enforcement officer fatally shot his ex-wife and wounded a sheriff and deputy at a home in northeastern Georgia.

Russell Andrews with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation says 41-year-old Anthony Giaquinta killed 40-year-old Kathy Giaquinta Smith at the home in Clarkesville.

A friend of Smith, 45-year-old Steven Thomas Singleton, was found dead outside the home, and authorities believe Giaquinta shot him as well.

Andrews says Giaquinta was found dead in the back yard of the home, and it is believed he was fatally wounded when he exchanged gunfire with a sheriff's deputy who responded to a 911 call of domestic violence at the home.

Andrews says Giaquinta also shot and wounded Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell and Deputy Bill Zigan.

Giaquinta was a former police officer and sheriff's deputy.

A former police officer fatally shot at least one person and wounded a sheriff and a deputy in an ambush Sunday at a home in northeastern Georgia, authorities said.

The suspect and another man also died, officials told news outlets. It was unclear whether the suspect shot himself or was killed by officers.

The officers were responding to a domestic violence incident around 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the home outside Clarkesville, Habersham County officials said in a statement. They found a woman dead in the garage, Rusty Andrews of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation told WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/1a2mE4e ).

Officers went into the house to check for other victims, and "it appears they were ambushed," Andrews said.

Another man was found dead in the home, but the circumstances of his death were not yet clear, either.

Sheriff Joey Terrell and Deputy Bill Zigan were shot, and both were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia, the county manager's office said in its statement.

Their injuries didn't appear serious, state police said.

Terrell was released from the hospital late Sunday night, Habersham County Manager Phil Sutton told The Associated Press. Sutton said late Monday morning that he wasn't sure when the deputy, who had remained in the hospital overnight, might be released.

Sutton said he spoke with the sheriff late Sunday night and that he was in good spirits, but "as always, all about business ... very concerned about his fellow officers."

The suspected shooter was 41-year-old Anthony Giaquinta, a former police officer in nearby Gainesville, officials told local news outlets.

Clarkesville is about 85 miles northeast of Atlanta in the northeast Georgia mountains.
